Gyeongju Cheomseongdae
Cheomseongdae, located in Gyeongju, South Korea, is an ancient astronomical observatory built during the Silla Kingdom (57 BCE – 935 CE). Constructed in the 7th century under Queen Seondeok's reign, it is one of the oldest surviving astronomical observatories in East Asia and is recognized as a National Treasure of South Korea. The tower, made from 362 stones symbolizing the days in a lunar year, stands about 9 meters tall. Its cylindrical structure, with a square base and round top, is designed to observe the stars and assist in agricultural planning. Cheomseongdae showcases the Silla Kingdom’s advanced scientific and architectural achievements and remains a significant historical site, drawing visitors from around the world to admire its ingenuity and cultural importance.
