Large tuna on the beach...How many? / / KBS 2023.07.03.

 Tuna fishing has been considered to have little to do with Korea, but things have changed recently.

 At this time last year, thousands of tuna carcasses were washed up on Yeongdeok Beach, and this time, large live tuna appeared on the shallow shore and were caught,

 How many tuna are there on the east coast of Gyeongsangbuk-do?

 Reporter Kim Young-jae reports.

 [Report]

 Something swims around, causing a rough current.

 This sea animal caught by onlookers with bare hands, a large tuna.

 It is unusual considering the characteristics of tuna in groups.  

 [Kim Young-gun/Large Tuna Witness: "I heard that there are a lot of tuna on the east coast, but I didn't know that such a large tuna would come out to the nearby sea, and I think a group of tuna left and came into this port."]

 In July last year, thousands of tuna bodies were found on Yeongdeok Beach.

 When tuna caught in the political net exceeded the fishing allowance, fishermen abandoned it.

 This year, 72 tons of tuna fishing nets were allocated to the east coast of North Gyeongsang Province.

 It tripled from last year, but it was exhausted early, and an additional 40 tons were allocated, but even this ended in three days.

 That's how many tuna there are on the east coast.

 [Kim Kwang-chul/Pohang City Fishermen's Chairman: "There is a change in water temperature compared to the past. You have to say that a lot of tuna a lot. You can get 100 tons at once, so you have to throw them all away..."]

 Rising sea temperatures are estimated to cause tuna swarms to move northward to the east coast unlike before, but international organizations' national allowance standards remain at the average catch 20 years ago.

 The tuna fishing allowance allocated through this is 870 tons in Korea, less than one-tenth of that of Japan.

 The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries is investigating tuna habitats on the east coast of Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gangwon-do to expand fishing allowances.

 참치잡이는 우리나라와는 별로 상관이 없는 것으로 여겨져 왔지만 최근엔 상황이 바뀌었습니다.

 지난해 이맘때 영덕 해변에 수천 마리의 참치 사체가 떠밀려 온데 이어 이번엔 살아 있는 대형 참치가  얕은 해안가에 등장해 잡히기도 했는데요,

 경북 동해안에 참치가 얼마나 많은 걸까요?

 김영재 기자가 보도합니다.

 [리포트]

 어른 허리 깊이의 바닷가.

 무언가가 거칠게 물살을 일으키며 이리저리 헤엄쳐 다닙니다.

 구경꾼들이 맨손으로 잡은 이 바다 동물, 대형 참치입니다.

 무리 지어 다니는 참치 특성을 감안하면 이례적입니다.  

 [김영건/대형 참치 목격자 : "동해안에 참치가 많이 올라온다고 얘기는 들었지만 저렇게 큰 참치가 가까운 바다까지 이렇게 나올 줄 몰랐고, 무리를 지어 다니는 참치 한 마리가 이탈해서 이 항으로 들어온 것 같습니다."]

 지난해 7월에는 영덕 해변에서 수천 마리의 참치 사체가 발견됐습니다.

 정치망에 잡힌 참치가 어획 허용량을 초과하자 어민들이 버린 것이었습니다.

 올해 경북 동해안에 배정된 참치 정치망 어획 허용량은 72톤.

 지난해보다 3배 늘렸지만 일찌감치 소진됐고, 40톤을 추가 배정했지만 이마저도 사흘 만에 끝났습니다.

 그만큼 동해안에 참치가 많아진 겁니다.

 [김광철/포항시 어민회장 : "과거에 비해서는 수온변화가 있다고 봐야죠. (참치가) 많이 잡힌다고 봐야 해요. 정치망에 한 번에 100톤 잡힐 수도 있고 하니까 그걸 다 버려야 하니까..."]

 바닷물 온도 상승으로 참치떼가 예전과 달리 동해안까지 북상하는 것으로 추정되지만, 국제기구의 국가별 허용량 기준은 20년 전 평균 어획량에 머물러 있습니다.

 이를 통해 배정받은 참치 어획 허용량은 우리나라가 870톤으로 일본의 10분의 1에도 못 미칩니다.

 해양수산부는 어획 허용량 확대 등을 위해 경북과 강원 일대 동해안의 참치 서식 실태를 조사하고 있습니다.
