K Webtoon Bollywood Ghana... Kakao taps 1.4 billion Indian market
Kakao webtoon knocks on the door of the Indian market with 1.4 billion people. Kakao Entertainment, which is in charge of the webtoon business, has set a goal of supplying webtoon intellectual property (IP) to the Indian market in earnest from the second half of the year, and is accelerating the preparation work. This is a paved stone for achieving KRW 1 trillion in sales this year.
Planting “webtoons” in India
Park Jong-cheol, head of Kakao Entertainment's platform business unit (Vice President) said in an interview with the Asian economy on the 7th, "India is a country where content is strong and is used as culture, starting with'Bollywood'." "The moment you accept the format, you will have tremendous potential."
India is not only the world's largest market with a population of about 1.4 billion people, but is also showing the fastest growth in the content market in the last five years. According to the Korea Creative Content Agency, the content market in India is estimated to reach $40.7 billion (about 46 trillion won) this year. In particular, an annual average growth rate of 10.14% is expected until 2024 thanks to the increase in the wireless Internet penetration rate and the expansion of content production investment.
Kakao Entertainment came to the Indian market early on. This is a high probability of India, where the comic and webtoon market has not started in earnest. Kakao Entertainment acquired'Cross Pictures' last year. Cross Pictures is the only domestic production company that has made a success case in the Indian market. It produced an Indian remake version of the movie “Suspicious She,” and launched India's first webtoon platform “Crosscomics”. Kakao Entertainment is considering supplying webtoon IP in earnest using'Crosscomics' as well as transforming the webtoon platform in India into a'Kakao' brand.
India has the world's largest movie market called Bollywood, so the possibility of using related IP is also open. Like the recent collaboration with DC Comics in the United States, Bollywood content can be converted into a webtoon, and Korean content can be made into a Bollywood movie. Vice President Park explained, "There is a positive aspect to fostering a competitive Korean content industry, such as the Indian version of'Why Secretary Kim's?"

Advances to Europe and "Sales 1 trillion won"
Kakao Entertainment drew a big picture of expanding into Europe this year following Japan, North America, Greater China, Southeast Asia, and India. It is an aspiration to be reborn as a global entertainer comparable to Disney and Marvel. In particular, Kakao Entertainment's merger with Kakao Page and Kakao M made it possible for businesses in all genres such as webtoon, drama, movie, and music production.
Kakao Entertainment's weapon is 8500 intellectual property rights (IPs). However, Kakao Entertainment plans to implement a “super IP” strategy different from that of Marvel. It is not a strategy that uses only a few strong IPs, but a quantitative game. Vice President Park said, "Because Kakao Entertainment operates a platform that users come in every day, it cannot use only 5 or 6 IPs. IPs worth billions, tens, and hundreds of billions are close to a lot." Even though the novel's value was small, when entering Kakao Entertainment, the value will double as it expands to the global region in various formats such as movies and dramas."
Kakao Entertainment expects to achieve annual sales of over 1 trillion won this year based on global content performance. He said, "Kakao Entertainment has built the world's first unrivaled value chain that has all genres of visual and auditory," he said. "It will be reborn as a global company by integrating Korean contents."
