This is a very similar legend to Gyeongju Daejangam, No. 2, which was buried beneath the rocks island, in order to protect the kingdom even after the death of the Queen of Munmu. [1] It is famous as a major sightseeing spot of Ulsan. Like the Oryukdo Island in Busan, it is an island in the sea close to the mainland. It is connected by a bridge and serves as a promenade for citizens.

Other nearby sightseeing spots in walking distance are Ilsan Beach [2], Sdo Island, and tourist attractions. However, there are Hyundai Heavy Industries, which goes to visit Ulsan when foreigners come to Ulsan.
There are lots of cats here and there around the rocky cliffs that are hard to reach, not walking trails. Tourists eat food or fishermen who catch fish and live while eating, but when they actually fish, they occasionally gather to catch fish.
이곳은 문무대왕의 왕비가 죽어서도 나라를 지키는 용이 되겠다하여 바위섬 아래에 묻혔다는 2번 항목의 경주 대왕암과 매우 비슷한 전설이 전해지고 있다.[1] 울산의 주요 관광지로 제법 유명하다. 부산 오륙도처럼 육지와 가까운 바다에 떨어진 섬인데, 다리로 연결되어 있어 시민들의 산책로로 기능하고 있다.
대왕암에 잠든 사람은 신라 효성왕으로, 문무대왕처럼 죽어 용이 되겠다고 수장을 한 것은 아니고, 유력자의 딸이었던 왕비가 후처에게 투기질을 해서 왕후를 죽여버렸고, 이에 왕의 지원을 받은 후처의 아버지가 반란을 일으켰지만 왕비의 세력에게 진압당하여 후처의 아버지(장인)도 처형당하고 왕권조차도 극도로 약화되었기 때문에 꼴보기 싫다고.(...) 수장을 선택한 것으로 알려져 있다. 불교식으로 화장한 뒤 뿌렸을 가능성이 높다.
경주 대왕암과 이름과 전설은 비슷하지만 분위기는 매우 다르다. 일단 규모부터 다른데, 경주 대왕암은 해수욕장 앞의 낮고 작은 바위섬이고 올라가볼 수 없지만, 울산 대왕암은 경주 대왕암보다는 부산의 태종대처럼 상당한 면적에 걸쳐 있는 해안바위 절벽지대이며, 주요 포인트만 둘러본다고 해도 좀 편한 복장과 신발을 신고 어느정도 트레킹을 한다는 생각을 하고 가는 것이 좋다. 참고로 여름에나 겨울에나 가면 바람이 아주 끝내준다. 다리 위에서 바람 때문에 바닷물이 바위에 부딪혀 튀어올라 얼굴에 튀는 걸 경험할 수 있다. 날씨가 험한 날에는 파도가 들이칠 정도.
2015년 8월 25일에 엄청나게 노후되었던 대왕암으로 연결해 주는 다리를 교체했으며, # 현재도 해풍으로 인한 부식이 일어나는지 수시로 페인트칠을 해주고 있다.
울산시에서는 주변에 소나무숲 산책로, 간단한 미로 등을 조성하여 커플이나 가족 단위의 관광객을 유치하는 데 힘쓰고 있으며, 근방에 어린이 테마파크인 '대왕별 아이누리'가 신축되어 2018년 7월 개장을 앞두고 있다.
걸어갈 수 있는 거리에 있는 근처의 다른 관광지로 일산해수욕장[2], 슬도, 그리고 관광지라기엔 뭣하지만 외지인이 울산에 오면 견학하러 많이 가는 현대중공업이 있다.
산책로가 아닌, 사람이 다니기 힘든 바위절벽 구석 여기저기에 고양이가 많다. 관광객이 주는 음식물이나 낚시꾼들이 낚은 물고기를 받아먹으며 살고 있는데 실제로 낚시를 하다보면 이따금씩 물고기를 얻어먹기 위해 모여든다.
